Hi!
My heart is full and my body is exhausted— I spent this week helping chaperone a group of kids from my church while they learned about hunger relief in the Fort Worth area. I couldn’t help but connect hunger and food with all the feeding of self and others Jesus did throughout the gospels.

I thought about the irony betweeen Jesus feasting with friends and feeding the hungry and the desperate need for food that many folks in our society face compared with the forced food deprivation that others put themselves through in the hopes of maintaining a “perfect,” “healthy” body. Isn’t it interesting, too, how Christian fundamentalism encourages a separation of the body from the spiritual? “Be modest; you don’t want men lusting after you body,” for instance.
Juxtaposed against this, I see Jesus waving a loaf of bread, saying, “Take. Eat.” And I can’t help wondering, what if we spent as much effort on feeding the hungry and tearing down the societal barriers that prevent people from food as we do dieting?
With that in mind, friend, I offer the following medi for you to chew on these next weeks:
Talk to you again soon,
Carissa
